Dr. Kohani is a longtime volunteer with Fresh Start Surgical Gifts, generously donating his expertise to help transform children’s lives. Founded by Dr. Dennis Nigro in 1991 and headquartered in San Diego, Fresh Start is a national nonprofit organization that transforms the lives of infants, children, and teens with physical differences caused by birth defects, accidents, abuse, or disease by providing reconstructive medical care and related services at no cost to families.
How Does Fresh Start Work?
In San Diego, Fresh Start holds six Surgery Weekends each year at Rady Children’s Health, where volunteer medical professionals provide reconstructive surgery and follow-up care. Services also include dental and orthodontic care, laser treatments, and speech therapy to support each child’s individual treatment plan.
How Do Patients Receive Treatment?
Fresh Start’s dental program is made possible by volunteer dentists, orthodontists, and dental teams who generously donate their time, expertise, and facilities. Several times each year, participating dentists and orthodontists open the doors of their practices, like Dr. Kohani and his team at La Jolla Cosmetic Dentistry and Orthodontics, to provide specialized procedures related to children’s qualifying medical conditions. They offer essential follow-up care and necessary treatments at no cost, ensuring families receive ongoing support without any financial burden.
Families of children who need specialized dental or orthodontic treatment related to birth defects, accidents, abuse, or disease, and whose treatment is not covered by insurance or would cause financial hardship, can learn about eligibility and apply at FreshStart.org.
